So recently as some of you may have noticed the 1% seemed to go crazy. As Michael Ballaban stated !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! the collector car market is skyrocketing. January is a big month for collector cars and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! were made by some of the worlds leading auction houses. What is an average income person to do when their hobby is getting less predictable than the stock market?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Well fret not my fellow petrol heads for there is an answer to this madness. The answer lies in a little event called the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. To refresh your memory history was made last August when for the first time in decades a post war automobile was crowned !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

This is needless to say shocking and will set a precedent for future collectors and show winners to come. The 1954 Ferrari 375 mm Scaglietti Coupe is a true masterpiece to behold and it was obvious that it deserved the trophy at the 2014 event. With the collect car world watching the entire game changed. Suddenly a door opened. To win Pebble one no longer needed post war pedigree and a small fortune now all one needed is a small fortune and pedigree.

If you don't believe me that there is a direct correlation between the 2014 Pebble Beach winner and the skyrocketing prices all you need to do is simply look at the evidence:

1976 Ferrari 308 GTB. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . If you notice the prices begin to skyrocket post Pebble.

This Talbot-Lago is another example.

This Porsche 356 is yet another.

There are of course exceptions to this rule. Looking at the Scottsdale auctions and using !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! however, it is becoming increasingly evident that the day of the post war car is here. As Micheal Ballaban stated the wealthy gap and high income baby boomers are playing a large part in the recent collector car spikes. Pebble Beach however cannot be forgotten. One little Ferrari and a few judges have shaken the car collecting culture into a new age.

Okkkk but things that would never win at Pebble (take 60's and 70's trucks for example) have also skyrocketed. Everything is on the up.

I didn't say it was the sole factor but I think it is contributing

this is why my investment monies will be going to Ferraris and not 401Ks

Honestly that's not a crazy idea if you buy the right one at the right time.

thank you. At least one person doesn't think I'm crazy

I think the 512TR is a good buy right now. Yes it's already gone up a lot. But you can still get a nice one for $150K. I could see it being $500K easy in 15 years

That's an excellent choice for a future obscenely expensive Ferrari. I think the 575M will be skyrocketing as well. The 599 is another candidate because it's the last Ferrari V12 with a manuel transmission.

Here are the pros and cons I've gathered for the 512TR:

+Only about 2000 of them made worldwide
+Actually very reliable for a Ferrari
+Best and last of the TRs, other than the already absurdly expensive (and weird looking 512M)
+Owners say the improvements really do make it a lot nicer to drive than the regular TR
+The TR/512TR/512M were the last non-hypercar Ferraris that had a 12 cylinder engine behind the driver. Everything since that has been front-mid engine and Ferrari seems pretty committed to that. They only stick the V12 where it is supposed to be in the hypercars.
+Last TR with pop up headlights

-Takes a while for the dry sump system to warm up. And you never know if the prior owners revved the piss out of the car before it was warm.
-The transmission and differential are solid as long as the car wasn't abused. But if it was driven hard by someone who doesn't know how to drive stick well then it could be damaged.

I agree the 575M and 599 will go up in value - if you're lucky enough to get one with Manuél inside. It's easier with the 575M than the 599 since there were only 33 599s to come to the US with the gated shifter.

You know that is an excellent point. The TR is and will probably be the the last true mid engined V12 made by Ferrari that isn't a hypercar. Only problem is if you are actually looking for an investment I think now is the time to buy. The car is finally in the classic car range and the prices are going to start creeping up higher and higher.

I think I need to sell all the German cars to get 512TR. I wonder if it's old enough to qualify for the cheap Hagerty insurance for classic cars.

I was playing around one day and certain C4 Corvettes were on the Hagerty site so I am sure you could get a 512TR on there. And it is like they say everyone should drive a v12 at least once before they die.

Nice! We need C4s and TRs

I have driven a V12

And it is just as awesome as people say it is

I must own Flat 12 and V12 both one day

I think the Ferrari 550 would be a nice car too. It's still under $100,000. And every single one was Manuél so you can just focus on finding the best deal on the car that's in the best shape instead of hunting for Manuél. It would be an awesome DD.

I'm just not sure I would want to own a C4.

But back to the Ferrari problem. If it was my money I'd take the 550. It's my personal favorite modern V12. But then again I don't think it would appreciate like the 512TR.

Yes. That would be the only other acceptable choice

Crazy that GM owned Lotus and they helped with the ZR1
